Major depressive disorder is characterized by profound sadness. Symptoms also include feelings of worthlessness, alterations in appetite or sleeping patterns, and a loss of interest in formerly pleasurable activities. Following an episode, the person may return to her or his usual state, but recurrences are commonly experienced. Bipolar disorders involve alterations in mood between depression and euphoria or mania with intervening periods of normal mood. There are periods of intense
depression that alternate with periods of mania in which the person may be impulsive, flighty, hyperactive, and restless.
