Answer to Question 1

Making the distinction between normal and abnormal behavior is challenging. There are numerous considerations, but psychologists most often identify abnormal behavior based on some combination of six criteria. Behavior that is unusual may be classified as abnormal. Yet, there is a wide range of behaviors that may be unusual yet not necessarily abnormal. Deviation from social norms is also a factor in identifying abnormal behavior. However, these norms do change from place to place and time to time and vary based on the culture. Emotional distress may also be classified as abnormal if it is inappropriate, excessive, or prolonged. Maladaptive behavior (that which causes personal distress, is self-defeating, or associated with significant problems) may also be classified as abnormal. Violent or dangerous behavior may be viewed as abnormal, but is mitigated by social context. Finally, errors in perception or interpretations of reality may be categorized as abnormal.
