The typical contents of a TPN solution are amino acids, electrolytes, glucose, vitamins and min-erals. Lipid emulsions may be added to the order.

The purpose of a TPN solution is to provide high-calorie IV nutrition to patients unable to ingest fluids and nutrients through the alimentary tract.
