A client is prescribed to receive vancomycin hydrochloride (Vancocin) 500 mg in 100 mL 0.9 normal saline IVPB q 6 hours to infuse over 1 hour. What is the flow rate in gtts/min with a drop factor of 15 gtts/mL?

  4. 30 gtts/min

Question 2

The client is prescribed 1,000 mL NS IV to infuse over 24 h. How many mL/hr will this client receive? Round to the nearest whole number.

Rationale 1: gtt/min = 15 gtt/1 mL x 100 mL/1 hr x 1 hr/60 min. Multiply the numerators and then divide by the denominators. The flow rate is 25 gtt/min.

Global Rationale: mL/hr = 1000 mL/24 hr = 41.6 or 42 mL/hr.
