Answer to Question 1

Hypothermia occurs when the body's core temperature drops below 95 degrees Fahrenheit. The immediate treatment of hypothermia includes removing any of the athlete's wet clothing and replacing it with dry clothing if possible. Attempt to move the athlete to a warmer environment. Apply heat to the axillary regions (armpits), neck, and groin. Place blankets over and beneath the athlete. If the athlete cannot get warm, or if symptoms do not improve within 10 minutes, or if uncomfortable about the situation, contact EMS. Contact EMS if body temperature drops below 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Monitor vital signs and be prepared to perform CPR if necessary.
