Between-class ability grouping negatively influences the quality of instruction that students receive in the following ways:
a.The best teachers are often assigned to teach the highest tracks and the least experienced or weakest teachers are assigned to the lowest tracks.
b. Teachers of high-ability classes stress critical thinking, self-direction, creativity, and active participation, while teachers of low-ability classes stress obedient behavior and getting along with classmates.
c. Teachers of low-ability groups cover less material and simpler material than teachers of high-ability groups.
d. Teachers of low-ability students expect and demand less of them than do teachers of high-ability students.

The goal of the constructivist approach to instruction is to help students create an understanding of subjects that makes personal sense by designing instruction that is based on students' interests, is relevant to their everyday lives, and requires collaborating with other students whose views may be different.
