Answer to Question 1

The families of many low-SES students have the following detrimental characteristics that contribute to low academic achievement: only one parent living at home, resulting in inadequate parental supervision; less support from parents for academic achievement; a limited vocabulary, which affects reading comprehension and writing; more limited access to the Internet; and lower quality verbal interactions between parent and child.

Answer to Question 2

Don't interrupt ongoing activities and don't call on just one student to recite or do board work while you ignore the rest of the class. Keep the entire class involved in instructional activities to avoid misbehavior.
