Answer to Question 1

Throughout successive generations, many ethnic barriers eroded, and the diverse European groups entered the mainstream. This created the myth of the American melting pot, a belief that the United States was a country of immigrants and that diverse groups would assimilate and blend into the American culture over time. However, in reality, many ethnic and racial groups retained their identities, but did not express them at work to keep their jobs and get ahead. This included Americanized names, perfecting their English and entering the mainstream as quickly as possible.
