To be effective, every organization must remain somewhat insulated from its larger environment and, at the same time, be involved with the environment. The risk of involvement is that it can bring in elements of the environment that are unintended or even undesirable in terms of the organizational culture. For example, a food-processing company cannot let just anyone come in and look around and touch equipment. The company must be diligent in protecting its trade secrets. However, the company must remain in contact with food growers, material suppliers, government regulators, and food retailers in order to operate.
