Any system, however large and complex or small and simple, contains, at minimum, the following elements: the external environment, inputs, transformation processes, outputs, and feedback loops. The external environment is the larger system or context within which a company operates. Inputs provide the elements needed to accomplish the organization's goal. Transformation processes occur as work is performed in pursuit of the organization's core purpose in creating value in its products. Supporting work (accounting, purchasing, maintenance) helps those at the core of the organization do their work efficiently and effectively. Outputs are the things that organizations produce for use by others. Feedback loops are components of a system that provide information that is used to make corrections or improvements in transformation processes.
