Answer to Question 1

D

Answer to Question 2

Scripture portrays two broad categories of incentives: rewards and punishments. Some rewards and punishments are extrinsic and material while others are intrinsic and spiritual. Both are legitimate in Scripture. Some rewards in the Bible could be both intrinsic and extrinsic. Standing above all other kinds of rewards is the promise of a close relationship with God. Extrinsic rewards can induce people to perform beyond the bare minimum. They are effective because people are self-interested. God appeals to our self-interest to motivate us to follow his will, but forbids us to pursue it at the expense of others. Jesus' interest in intrinsic motivation does not come from its inherent moral superiority, but rather from his desire to encourage the disciples to focus on their mission and not on themselves. However, the distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic rewards should not be taken to the extreme, because they are not always mutually exclusive.
