The primary motive of competitors is doing better than others do, and beating them in open competition. Individualists care almost exclusively about maximizing their own gain. They do not care whether others do better or worse than they do. Cooperators are concerned with maximizing joint outcomes, getting as much as possible for their team. Equalizers seek to minimize differences between themselves and others.
