Answer: Interview planning is essential to effective employment interviews. A primary consideration should be the speed in which the process occurs. The physical location of the interview should be both pleasant and private, providing for a minimum of interruptions. The interviewer should become familiar with the applicant's qualifications by reviewing the data collected from other selection tools. As preparation for the interview, the interviewer should develop a job profile based on the job description/specification. After listing job requirements, it is helpful to have an interview checklist that includes: (1) comparing a candidate's application and rsum with job description; (2) developing questions related to the qualities sought; (3) preparing a step-by-step plan to present the position, company, division, and department; and (4) determining how to ask for examples of past job-related applicant behavior.

An unstructured interview is one in which the interviewer asks probing, open-ended questions. This type of interview is comprehensive, and the interviewer encourages the applicant to do most of the talking. In the structured interview, the interviewer asks each applicant for a particular job the same series of job-related questions.
