What are the four critical leadership issues and challenges facing contemporary organizations? Provide at least one reason why each of these issues are important to address.

Students should name all four of the critical issues for contemporary organizations and one reason why organizations and/or their leaders are impacted.
 Globalization
 Economies are increasingly international which increases the number of interactions with people from other cultures particularly in organizations with international offices, branches, or divisions. Sending an expat to lead in a different culture will not be effective unless the leadership style is culturally appropriate and they have studied the culture
 Interpersonal practices differ between cultures
 Practices that aren't part of Western culture such as face-saving behaviors (mian-zi) and social networks (guanxi) present challenges for leaders unfamiliar with the culture
 Effective leadership has a cultural component that impacts social interactions
 Ethics and corporate social responsibility
 Incidents of unethical leader behavior are causing concern
 Negative outcomes of certain types of leaders (the dark side) need to be discovered and remediated
 Diversity
 Focused on understanding cultural differences
 Workplaces are becoming more culturally diverse, possibly changing what is and isn't effective
 Gender
 Women make up a larger proportion of leaders
 Leadership style, expectations, and interpretation of actions differ between men and women
 Leadership research is now investigating effects of females instead of only sampling males
