In the team-based design, organizations are structured around processes instead of tasks. Autonomous work teams perform many different steps in the process. With this design, manufacturing and service organizations can streamline their activities, cut costs, and eliminate many staff positions. In vertically integrated organizations, an organization obtains control of its own suppliers and/or customers.
In boundaryless organizations, chains of command are eliminated, spans of control are unlimited, and rigid departments give way to empowered teams. Modular and virtual organizations are variants of the boundaryless organization. Together they are applicable for companies that need the flexibility to meet changes in demand, global markets, and technology.
