Traditional benefit plans were based on the assumption that all employees desired the same package of benefits. This did not account for different family structures or individual needs. A cafeteria-style benefit plan recognizes individual differences in which benefits are desired. The plan allows employees to select exactly which benefits they want most. This leads to a package of benefits that is most desirable to the employees. With reference to expectancy theory, the employees select the benefits (rewards) that are most desirable (valence) to them.
