The problem statement in quantitative research asks a question about the relationship between two variables; the problem in qualitative research is much more general and indicates a focus of inquiry rather than a specific question.

A good theory is (a) testable (b) falsifiable (c) has internal consistency and (d) provides the simplest, clearest and most plausible explanation for the phenomenon under investigation.
