When Lufthansa wanted to cut its payroll, the firm asked its unions to help meet cost cutting goals. Union representatives meet regularly to identify ways like reducing work rules and eliminating jobs through attrition and early retirement that will help the firm to trim payroll costs without making massive layoffs.
