The defensive approach refers to a situation in which an organization does only what is legally required.

Licensing is a contractual arrangement in which a firm in one country licenses the use of its intellectual property to a firm in a second country in return for a royalty payment. Franchising is a specialized form of licensing which occurs when the franchisor authorizes the franchisee to utilize its operating system as well as its intellectual property.
