Answer to Question 1

Conflict management is the application of resolution and stimulation techniques to achieve the optimal level of departmental conflict. There are five basic approaches for resolving conflict. They are: 1. avoidance  when the conflict you face is trivial, when emotions are running high and time can help cool things down, or when the potential disruption from a more assertive action outweighs the benefits of resolution, avoidance can work best; 2. accommodation  the goal of which is to maintain harmonious relationships by placing another's needs and concerns above your own; 3. forcing  which is an attempt to satisfy ones own needs at the expense of the other party. Forcing works well when there is need for a quick resolution on important issues for which unpopular actions must be taken and when commitment by others to your solution is not critical; 4. compromise  which requires each party to give up something of value; and 4. collaboration  the ultimate win-win solution. This technique is typically characterized by open and honest discussion among the parties, intensive listening to understand differences and identify areas of mutual agreement, and careful deliberation over a full range of alternatives to find a solution that is advantageous to all.
