Motivations for rating deflation include:
- Shock employees.
- Teach a rebellious employee a lesson.
- Send a message to employee that he/she should consider leaving.
- Build a strongly documented, written record of poor performance.

Employees are happiest and the most productive when they work in an organization:
 With an environment high on trust and respect
 Where they can have fun and develop relationships with others
 Where they can do meaningful, interesting work
 Where they have a balanced worklife relationship with time spent away from work with friends and families as well as hobbies
 With learning and development opportunities that may lead to good career opportunities in the future
