Answer to Question 1

Clustering is the process of grouping related records together on the basis of having similar values for attributes. For example, an airline may cluster its frequent fliers based on miles flown or the number of flight segments. These results can then be used for targeting certain groups of customers in marketing campaigns.

In contrast, classification is used when the groups (classes) are known beforehand, and records are segmented into these classes. For example, a bank may have found that there are different classes of customers who differ in their likelihood of defaulting on a loan. All customers can be classified into different risk categories in order to ensure that the bank does not exceed a desired level of risk within its loan portfolio. Typically, classification would use a decision tree to classify the records.
