The physical description of an attribute defines the data type, data length, and other data value constraints, and thus indicates specifications for the storage and processing of the attribute. The semantic description of the attribute indicates the logical meaning of the attribute in the users' environment, and thus the semantic description differentiates between attributes having the same physical description.
