Two-phased locking is a strategy to ensure the serializability of transactions. A transaction is allowed to obtain locks as necessary, but once the first lock is released no other locks may be obtained. This produces the two-phased effectthe growing phase in which locks are obtained and the shrinking phase as locks are released.
