Answer to Question 1

Presence awareness is a feature introduced by the IM software which allows users to display their current status to their contacts, colleagues, or buddy list. The software shows whether a person is logged in, and he can elaborate and let others know if he is available to answer a question, pick up the phone, or to stop by for a brief meeting. Presence awareness indicators add an important human element to online collaboration, and they are a key reason people adopt the tool within organizations.
