Optimization is used in decision support in many settings in which the best solution must meet many constraints that are difficult to juggle. A publishing house, for instance, tries to optimize profit per published book deal, taking into account constraints such as printing costs, discounts, and advertising. The list grows ever longer and complex as the decision support tools try to balance many competing variables.
