The approach used to transmit data between computers is another characteristic that distinguishes networks, such as circuit-switched network that communicates by establishing a channel and packet-switched network in which data is broken into segments, called packets, for transmission.
Networks are also grouped based on how centralized they are and how the devices on the network share the workload and provide services to others. For example, client-server network is a type of network in which the workload for running applications is shared between the server and the client devices, such as desktop computers, laptops, or smartphones.
