Optical fiber cables transmit bits by means of light pulses along a glass or plastic fiber, rather than electrical signals over a conductor. It can carry signals over very long distances and has a high bandwidth. Large fiber-optic cables, approximately the size of a garden hose, span all the planet's oceans. This network of fiber-optic cables is very durable and forms the arteries for worldwide telecommunications.
