Although the first normal form was not directly mentioned in the textbook, it requires the removal of repeating data, so there is a single value at the intersection of each row and column of the relation. Relations are in second normal form if nonkey attributes require the whole key for identification. Relations are in third normal form if no transitive dependencies exist in the relation.
