Data modeling focuses on the data that must be stored by the system. Data-flow diagrams and the processing logic techniques demonstrate how, where, and when data are used or modified by the system. However, these techniques do not illustrate the definition, structure, and relationships within the data. By providing this view, data modeling complements the process modeling and logic modeling techniques.
