Answer to Question 1

A SQL Server login grants access to the server itself, but it doesn't provide any permissions on databases. For that a database user is created. The database user is mapped to a particular login and then granted permissions on database objects.

Answer to Question 2

Authentication is the process of making sure a user is who he or she says they are. In SQL server this can be done by Windows, by user name and password or by validating a certificate. Authorization is the process of assigning permissions to a user who has been authenticated.
