Cardinality refers to the number of records allowed in a related table. A business, for example might have a rule that each customer can have no more than three emails listed. So the Email entity would have a maximum cardinality of three. DBMSs, however, do not generally have the relational tools to enforce these cardinality limits. At most they can specify that at least one record is required. To enforce cardinality rules usually requires the use of triggers or other programming.
