Answer to Question 1

A database is an organized collection of data and a database management system (DBMS) is a system that administers such a collection for the information system. In the very least, a DBMS must be able to carry out the following operations: create new entries in the database, retrieve (find and read) data as required by the applications, update (change) existing entries, and delete unwanted data.
An advanced DBMS, however, must do more than these basic operations: it must present an interface that encapsulates (hides) its internal structure, it must offer a high level language for data management, and it must safeguard the integrity and the security of data.
