Prototyping is the creation of a working model with the essential features of the final product for testing and verification of requirements. In incremental development, the product is built through successive versions that are refined and expanded with each iteration. Whereas prototyping aims to build a model that implements all major requirements, incremental development fully implements a selected set of requirements in each version of the product. The incremental approach groups the requirements into layers. The requirements in the innermost layer, considered most essential to the mission of the software, are implemented first. In each successive iteration, the defects of the previous version are corrected, the design is adjusted accordingly, and the requirements in the next layer are undertaken.
