Organizations generally seek to replace legacy systems, but there are other choices available as well. Legacy systems can be restructured which involves improving their logical structure and improving their stability. Legacy systems can be reengineered, which involves extracting the data elements to an existing file and the decision logic from a program and moving them to a new hardware platform. Legacy systems could be refurbished, which involves adding some worthwhile extensions to the system. Legacy systems can be rejuvenated, which involves adding a significant range of new functions to the systems to increase their value. Legacy systems can be rearchitected. Legacy systems can be replaced with a packaged system, such as an ERP system. Finally, legacy systems can be replaced.
