The five phases are need identification, information search, evaluation of alternatives, purchase decision and delivery, and postpurchase behavior. Need identification occurs when a consumer is faced with an imbalance between the actual and the desired states of a need. In the information search phase, the consumer searches for information about the various alternatives available to satisfy the need. During the evaluation of alternatives phase, the consumer evaluates alternatives and negotiates terms. During the purchase and delivery phase, the consumer makes the purchasing decision, arranges payment and delivery, and purchases warranties. The postpurchase behavior phase consists of customer service and evaluation of the usefulness of the product.
