Horizontal LANs on different floors of a building being connected vertically to a BN is fairly common. However, it may be the case that the network segments are housed in a large, single-story warehouse such that each network segment is on the same horizontal plane. In this case, the BN that connects the LANs together, rather than being vertical, is also horizontal.
