Answer to Question 1

When an IP address is compared with its associated subnet mask, what is revealed or filtered out is the network portion and value of the IP address and the host portion and value of the IP address. This comparison process is done through a technique called ANDing. ANDing compares a host's IP address with a subnet mask and derives a result. ANDing an IP address to its subnet mask reveals network and host address values so that a sending host knows whether a receiving host is on the same or on a different network. If a receiver is on a different logical network than the sender, then routing must occur. A subnet mask helps to reveal whether routing is needed.

Answer to Question 2
