the whole is greater than the sum of its parts (Covey, 1989). Hence, synergistic nursing models such as
those espoused by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses provide nurses with a model in
which the needs and characteristics of the patient, clinical unit, or system are matched to a nurse's
competencies (Hardin, 2005).
