Teaching hospitals tend to incur higher costs because of the salaries required for supervision of physicians, duplication of tests and procedures through the learning process, longer times re-quired to process patients, costs of state-of-the art technology, biomedical research, and stand-by capacity of specialized care. Because of the additional costs, few for-profit agencies and organi-zations support teaching programs.
