Answer to Question 1

D, E, F
Horizontal violence has been described as an expression of group behavior that evolves from feelings of low self-esteem and lack of respect from others where the individual feels oppressed (Longo & Sherman, 2007). Nurses have also been described as eating their own due to verbal, nonverbal, and physical abusive behavioral practices such as acting behind somebody's back or belittling others. Horizontal violence may be verbal, nonverbal, or physical in nature. Examples of verbal horizontal violence abuse include: saying that the reason why everyone has to stay late is because Nurse Q did not get her work done on time, snide remarks or abrupt response to questions posed by a new nurse on the unit, group infighting and refusal to let a new nurse speak when the group or clique is present. Nonverbal examples are raising of eyebrows or making faces in response to comments from the individual, and physical examples of horizontal violence include not being available to provide assistance in moving a patient or accidentally bumping into a new nurse, causing her to drop a handful of patient charts.
