Nurses have also been described as eating their own due to verbal, nonverbal, and physical abusive behavioral practices such as acting behind somebody's back or belittling others. Horizontal violence may be verbal, nonverbal, or physical in nature. Examples of verbal horizontal violence abuse include: saying that the reason why everyone has to stay late is because Nurse Q did not get her work done on time, snide remarks or abrupt response to questions posed by a new nurse on the unit, group infighting and refusal to let a new nurse speak when the group or clique is present.
