Scott (1967) noted that differences in status can motivate people and provide them with a sense of identification within a group. High status team members tend to initiate communication more often, have more influence over decisions the team makes, and are provided with more opportunities to participate (Owens, Mannic, & Neale, 1998). Low status members may feel intimidated or even ignored by higher status team members, hence may not benefit as fully from the high status individual's expertise (Topping, Norton, & Scafidi, 2003).

Four key characteristics of excellent communication that Nurse B may be demonstrating are: 1) sensitive of other's values and cultural differences, 2) aware of other's abilities, 3) shows a genuine interest in the team members, and 4) displays good verbal and written communication skills. The use of mindguards occurs in groupthink (not excellent communication as described in this scenario) by team members to withhold conflicting/disharmonious information that is in direct opposition to the team's views and thoughts.
