In 2004, the AACN took the position that preparation for advanced nursing practice roles should be moved to the doctoral level (DNP) by the year 2015. Masters level preparation is the current level of educational preparation for the APN. Nurses have to obtain their bachelor's degree prior to receiving a master's degree. Certification is a voluntary process by which an agency or an association grants recognition to a person who has met specified qualifications.
