The practice of nurse-midwifery in the United States was started in the 1920s by Mary Breckinridge and Hattie Hemschemeyer. Florence Nightingale was the founder of professional nursing. Lydia Hall is a nurse theorist who developed the Core, Care, and Cure theory. Jeanne Mance was the founder of the first hospital in North America, which was established in Montreal, Canada.

Dr. Ford and Dr. Silver developed the first nurse practitioner program in 1965 as a result of the disparity of primary care physicians during the Vietnam conflict. They did not develop the clinical specialist role, graduate program in nursing, or group practice.
