Answer to Question 1

Correct Answer: 1

Different cultures display emotions differently and also present verbal and nonverbal communications differently. Lack of eye contact may be interpreted as secretiveness, shyness, guilt, lack of interest, or even a sign of mental illness. A nurse should not assume anything and should ask open-ended questions to garner an understanding of a client's cultural beliefs. A cultural assessment takes time and usually needs to extend over several time periods.

Answer to Question 2

Correct Answer: 2, 3, 4

Discrimination is the differential treatment of one group or one person over another based on race, ethnicity, gender, age, social class, disability, sexual preference, or other distinguishing characteristic. In nursing, discrimination distracts from providing culturally competent care. Cultural assimilation is not a type of discrimination. Culture shock is the state of being disoriented or unable to respond to a different cultural environment because of its sudden strangeness, unfamiliarity, and incompatibility to the stranger's perceptions and expectations.
