The ANA's position is that it is the function of the professional association, not the law, to establish the scope of practice for advanced nursing practice and that state boards of nursing regulate advanced nursing practice within each state. All levels of advanced practice nursing are subject to specific and separate regulations that are different from those that apply to basic level nurses.
