The nurse states, I have been asked to write a PICOT question for the next evidence-based nursing practice meeting. I am having trouble with the C' part. Which question, asked by a peer, will be of most help to this nurse?

  1. What is the cause of the problem you are investigating?
  2. What are you calling for the intervention to do?
  3. What intervention are you comparing to?
  4. Which kind of clinical intervention do you plan to address?

Question 2

Which clinical question reflects the PICOT format?

  1. Do children who must have suture repair of lacerations do better when placed on a papoose board or when held by a parent?
  2. How do 24-hours of postoperative inpatient care compared with 12 hours of postoperative outpatient care affect development of deep vein thrombosis in the first seven days after hysterectomy?
  3. What is the mean heart rate decrease in patients treated with guided imagery rather than being treated with medication for anxiety?
  4. In patients who sustain traumatic head injuries, is it better to keep them immobilized in a head vise until they have returned from radiology or is it better to remove the head vise as soon as the x-rays have been read?
