Meta-analyses often are undertaken by researchers who did not do one of the primary studies in the review. Metasyntheses, by contrast, are often done by researchers whose area of interest has led them to do both original studies and metasyntheses on the same topic. Like a quantitative systematic review, a metasynthesis requires considerable advance planning. Also like meta-analysts, metasynthesists must also make upfront sampling decisions. For example, they face the same issue of opting to include only findings from peer-reviewed journals in the analysis.
