Metasyntheses are more than just summaries of prior qualitative findings (i.e., integration); they involve a discovery of essential features of a body of findings and a transformation that yields new interpretations. Metasyntheses can build upon meta-summaries, but require findings that are more interpretive, i.e., from reports that are characterized as syntheses. A researcher may decide to exclude studies in which the reported findings are not adequately supported with direct quotes from participants. In a meta-analysis systematic review, the sample consists of the primary studies that have addressed the research question, not necessarily phenomenological primary studies.
