Annie Potter is a nurse at a public clinic that provides prenatal care. On a recent Monday, Annie cared for Grace, a 25-year-old who is approximately 8 weeks pregnant. Annie reassures
 
  Grace that because she is early in her pregnancy, by coming to the clinic for regular checkups and following instructions, her pregnancy should go smoothly. Annie explains that prenatal care does all of the following except:
  1. Detect complications of pregnancy (e.g., diabetes or hypertension) so that they can be properly managed.
  2. Direct low-income clients to social services such as Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) that can improve nutrition and health care.
  3. Ensure that there will be no birth defects that go undetected.
  4. Provide important education and counseling that address lifestyle changes (e.g., stopping smoking) that will help ensure a healthy baby.
